Do you know why Andrew is so sleepy ?
It is not because he is on any medicines...It is because he is up alot at nite :( We moved him out of his pack and play because he was climbing in and out and destroying the room either way. We put him back in the pack and play because at least some of the time it contained him but last nite he must have fallen and cut his chin somehow so we moved him back to the mattress on the floor. His room is child proofed but he would find the handiwipes and pull them all out or the diapers would be scattered all over....We actually had our first evaluation of him in our home with a special ed. coordinator and pyschologist...this is how he was :) Sound asleep and not his usual active self. We have tried keeping him up but that does not help. He used to take melatonin when he first came home but that only helps you go to sleep . That is not his problem ...He won't stay asleep. So I talked with our pediatrician last week and next week we will see him for an evaluation on some medication to help him stay asleep all nite. Otherwise he is to tired during the day....
When he gets up he likes to play by banging on the wall or laughing so loud the girls above him can hear him. This is making it difficult to just ignore because it is keeping others up at nite too...I think he will have better days if he gets better sleep...So we are going to the next step with him.
Any suggestions or advice about sleep issues would be appreciated.
I don't know much about sleep issues but have you thought about using a crib with a crib tent over it? I wouldn't get any rest if I hadn't gotten one for Artiom. I could hug whoever invented those things!
ReplyDeleteWe are having so many sleep issues with Jon Felipe that this really resonated with me. I'm hoping you get lots of good suggestions that we can try too.
ReplyDeleteOur Peter won't sleep in an open bed and is too tall for a crib/playpen. He picks the paint and drywall off the walls and chews anything he can, pulls down curtains- we could not sleep due to all the noise of the desruction the first weeks he was home; when he finally did sleep, he scooted around on the floor, rocking and dozing. Then, our friend lent us one of those 6 panel playyards...we put a quilt down on the floor and put him to sleep in it. He slept- all night. He has slept on it every night since. We've tried letting him out and seeing what he would do- he picks paint/drywall again. For now, he sleeps in the playyard..it's the only way he and us can sleep. Just an idea. Blessings, Jennifer
ReplyDeleteThanks Jodi and Jennifer for the suggestions. The problem with the playyard is he is so active and exploring his enviromnent ( a good thing)that he would figure out he could climb over it...that is like a pack n play and he does that. A crib tent would almost have to be made of metal and attached with screws to keep him in. Like the cribs they have in hospitals for babies. His third name could be Houdini :) He figures out how to get out of things in the most amazing ways.
ReplyDeleteKathleen we are going to try medicating him at nite with a sleeping pill. We see our pediatrician Tuesday to discuss our options...nothing seems to be working and the girls above his room hear him thru the nite some nites-more nites than not.
When Glory and Bryant came home...they slept about 3 hours a week. Bryant would be up banging on things and Glory was up giggling. I love her giggle but all night was too much!! I was frustrated and had an appointment to put them back on some kind of medication when our psychologist called me and said "try 100mg of 5-HTP two times a day and melatonin at night". It worked the very first night. We have had no sleep issues like that again. It might be worth trying. I hope you can all get sleep soon. I know how hard that is!
ReplyDeleteAmanda,
ReplyDeleteWe have used melatonin and it helps him go to sleep but it won't keep you asleep- which is the problem. He will sleep and wake up at 2, 4, 5 am and then decide to play. What is 5- HTP ? Where do you get it ? I think I will email you :)
