Parenting: The Privledge of Choice(s)

Geesh, parenting these days is a complicated matter.

To vaccinate on schedule, to delay vaccinations, to selectively vaccinate, or not to vaccinate at all?
To breast feed or formula feed? (and if you choose the bottle route...BPA free or glass or regular bottles?)
To cloth diaper, use disposable diapers, or practice elimination communication.
Co sleep or crib?
Stay at home or work at home or work outside of the home?
To schedule or go with the flow?
and my personal favorite (because it gets everyone's panties in a wad)...to let your child cry it out or not?

Of course then there are all the side issues once you get out of the baby stage:

Twinkies or dried camp berries?
PBS or Pixar or nothin' ?
Extracurricular activities?
Public school or private school or homeschool or unschool or .... ?

And so on and so forth. A blessed myriad of choices.

Obviously, since I am the mom of three (soon to be four) kids, I have been faced with a lot of the above mentioned choices. And while I do feel pretty passionately about some of the choices we have made, the goal of this post isn't to expound on why I feel my choices are the best.

The goal of this post is to recognize the fact that I get to parent the way I do because I am privileged.

In fact, just about every parent in America and the rest of the modernized world is extremely privileged. We not only have choices, we have the legitimate means for researching our choices. We have pediatricians. We have on call nurses available 24/7. We have books. We have support groups. We have support groups for our support groups. And of course, we have the inestimable power of google and Gramma.

Moms in Haiti aren't choosing not to feed their kids organically, or choosing not to let them watch television, or losing sleep worrying about the fact that their children might get autism from a mmr vaccination. They are too busy surviving. Food. Clean water. And glory be, a roof over their heads. Those are the things that consume a moms mind in Haiti. Choices aren't even on their radar. They are too busy surviving.

Our good friend Sherrie Faussey, missionary in Haiti, just wrote of a mumps outbreak among their orphanage.

Mumps.

Yes, I had to go google what mumps are. Mumps aren't even on my radar. Or my kids.

And these issues aren't contained to Haiti but repeated and repeated (and repeated) all over the world.

It's not that I care what choices you makes as a parent.
You may do things one way.
I may do things another.
Chances are you have your reasons.
So do I.

Tomatoe.
Tomato.

Its that I have been plagued with this overwhelming sense that maybe our privileged first world way of over complicated parenting choices is creating a generation of parents that are:
1) parenting with an impaired sense of perspective
2)
too adamant about the particulars of their parenting choices
3)
are too sure every decision will set their kids on an unalterable trajectory.

There are a lot of ways to legitimately screw up your kids...and I don't really think it has anything to do with the above written choices.

Feeling guilty because we live in a privileged world isn't the answer either. A lotta good that does. Instead of feeling guilty...pray about what God would have you do to make a difference in the lives of others. And then act on it.

So lets take the opportunity to stop judging other moms for the choices they make, garner some perspective, be thankful that we even have these choices, and remember that ultimately your kids will remember your character and what you did to alleviate the suffering of others WAY MORE than your rules regarding television and high fructose corn syrup.

Andrew chilling - after we got home from the hospital

Everything went well this morning at the hospital with Andrew. We got up at 5:45 and he slept the 2 hrs there and was great . During the procedure he did not like it but it went well. They had Joseph, Cate and I and 2 other assistance plus the doctor hold him. This was a specialist - a pediatric GI radiologist. He was very good and fast.....Basically Andrew does not have a reflux issue . All of his tissues are healthy and there is no hiatal hernia or blockages either. So we will wait for this report to go back to our GI doctor and see where we got from here. We are pretty certain he is over the H Pyloria. He vomits very little . Now it is mostly at nite or sometimes at nap . He is also very chubby now . He is 36 lbs now.

He's practicing for tomorrow at the hospital....

Not really...Tomorrow Andrew is having his upper GI. This is where he will not be put to sleep but he will need to be restrained. They will place a tube down his throat and pour some white , chalky substance that has barium in it. Then as it goes down they take pictures and will be able to get a better look at his reflux issues. I am not looking forward to this procedure at all. He will be screaming I am sure the whole time and will be moving around as much as the restraints will let him. He is very strong...sometimes just to brush his teeth it takes 4 of us. He is the strongest willed child I have ever seen...So how positive tomorrow will be depends on his mood. Now even in a great mood most of us would not be very happy about this procedure...add to this a little blind boy who is autistic, with sensory processing issues and has a history of severe abuse...Please pray for us. At least they agreed to let me be in the room with him during it...because there is no way we would agree to it if they did not let me be there.

Upward Soccer Saturday

We have played sports before with the local rec. league here where we live...including soccer. However we quickly realized that did not fit to well with our family ( too many reasons to go into here). We have been attending New Life Church and they participate in a program called Upward Sports which includes, soccer, touch football and basketball. We put 7 of the kids in it this Spring to try it. So far it is working out for us. Saturday we went to the games. Seven of the kids are divided into 3 diff. teams..and yesterday some of them played each other. Of course Paw Paw  ( daddy) taking the littles to the snack table was fun for them.  I loved watching them and it is always so funny to hear the comments about our very large family when we go out with most of the kids :) We hear lots of can you believe they have that many kids ?. There are 27 children in that family...wow look at them...We never hear any negative comments . Most of time they are comments that people can't believe there are this many children in one family. I know even for some of you ...but to Paul and I it just seems natural .

First day in the pools

The crazy ones...

Oh maybe I will....

Oh look at us....

You wanna swim ?

I have my goggles now if only someone would put me in a swim suit.....

Today was a gorgeous day...Sunny, warm in the 80s with no humidity . We have our pools open and ready for swimming but the water temp. is a bit cold for me....68 to 70. After many pleas for ," May we swim?" I relented and the kids had a blast as you can see...It was mostly Luke, Mya, Gracie, Ava and Josiah who swam today...the others were out doing other things.

Some of the medical insurance issues I have to deal with way too often.....

Medical insrurance issue number 1

Anyone else out there have issues with their prescription provider ? Basically we are being forced to use only Medco a mail order prescription provider thru my husband's employer. We get several medicines thru Medco- mostly not by our complete choice...sort of a push. Let me explain...it is much cheaper to use them for prescriptions that are on going for chronic issues like ADHD or a heart medicine Luke has to take. I have resisted for years switching some of our meds over to this but now I am being told that the medicines will cost us even more to use if we continue at our local pharmacy instead of Medco.  I take a HRtherapy and Tricor meds. with Medco. I love our local pharmacies because they give very personal care and consideration to our multiple needs... I often call them about dosing issues or is there another option and they always take the time to address my questions. They are an important part of our ability to care for our many special needs children.

Now on to just one of the issues I have had with Medco. This am I called in my refill for my Tricor thru their automated line...after looking closely at the bottle I notice that my old primary care doctor was the prescribing doctor for the last refill in March 2011. The problem is he has not been my doctor for over 5 yrs and should never ok or even be asked by Medco to approve my refill....I have spent over 2 hrs dealing with this very upsetting issue with Medco and my personal doctor and the other doctor. Neither doctor has any record of being sent by Medco a fax for my refill in March...So why did it get refilled and why under a doctor who is not my doctor...Imagine a doctor okaying a medicine for someone who is not his patient or Medco refilling a prescription based on a doctor who is not the patient's doctor...Thank God it is only Tricor this time...what if it was the heart medicine Luke was on and should not have had it refilled....I shudder to think of how many other prescription mistakes Medco makes or even doctors....I manage all of our medical issues but it sure takes a lot of time because the insurance companies can really do a better job or change their systems to catch these issues.

Medical insurance issue number 2

Mya was hit by a soccer ball 2 weeks ago on her knee that just had surgery. Her stitches were disolving and by her bath time I could see an infection starting in them. She had a round pink spot over her knee and it was warm to touch. Of course this was on Sat. nite at 9:30...I called the hospital and asked for the doctor on call for Dr. Standard...  I got a call back from a doctor I did not recognize and he said he did not know of Dr. Standard...I asked him questions about things he should have been aware of for the orthopedic on call...Finally he agreed with my assumption the operator had made a mistake. He could only give me advice and I knew in my momma's heart she needed to be put on an antibiotic...So I called back and got it corrected and sure enough the correct doctor agreed with my assumption....

Medical insurance issue number 3

We have lots of kids...So yeah we have more than the average family ( 27 kids ) but we can not be discriminated against for the number of children we have. Our insurance company has had a problem keeping all of the kids listed every week on our plan...I will go to see a doctor and they run our card thru and it will show that child was terminated . You see Aetna does not have a computer program for the number of dependents we have with them...so their solution is to have one person input our family names every Monday into their system...other families they don't do this way....Actually Hewitt is the provider who inputs the family members names to Aetna ...So why is it that for over 3 yrs I often go to a doctor and I am told that my child's coverage has been terminated...Well once - the person who does that inputting was on vacation. Now I have offered to do this for them for free :) Really I have. Fortunately all of our doctors and there are several know our family well and are ok with my reason for why this happens...But don't you think that an insurance company as big as Aetna is could get this right ?

Don't get me wrong I am grateful for our insurance and all we have been able to do for our children but it has taken up lots of my time to work things out and now I have another thing to make sure is correct...that the "real" doctor is the one who refills our prescriptions.

My Daddy has been "Home" 2 yrs today

Today is the 2nd year since my daddy died. I can't say that it gets any easier as the time goes by because in some ways it has gotten harder. I still can not revisit memories of my parents without getting to the point of an all out crying session. When I talk with my older kids - especially my girls it is the same way for them...wonderful memories of grandad and grandmother- mom and daddy.
I often wish for more time - I want to curl up in his lap, hold his hand, hear his voice and laughter...Have him tease and kid with us like no one else . I want to be able to share in the joy of watching all his grandchildren grow up ( and now there are some who will never personally know them)...He loved children and was the most patient person I knew. I miss them both and I am grateful for them having been my parents.

The top picture is of my parents when they first were married...The rest were taken the Sept. before he died in May at my niece, Katie's wedding. He loved being surrounded by the kids and in that pic. we only had part of the kids with us at the wedding. In the bottom picture he is watching the dancing at the reception...He and my mother loved to dance...I often wonder if they are up in Heaven now dancing.
