This starts the Holy Week for us... we love this time of year for all the new life that is around us. It is also my favorite holiday- Easter. One of the ways we try to make it a special time in our home is to make a "tomb scene". We plant grass seed around it and watch it grow... eventually you will see lots of grass growing up. We also do the "Resurection Eggs" - actually this basket of eggs is 25 yrs old. I made them that long ago to do with our first group of children who are now adults :) These eggs have symbols of things that are a part of the Easter story like spices in one egg to remind us of how they put them on Jesus's body when he was put in the tomb, nails for the nails they used to nail him to the cross, and one egg is empty... because of the tomb being empty on Easter morning. At dinner or family devotion time we review the story this week. Also we do crafts...like this one with the baby chicks or bunny puppets...Please share some of your ideas with us about how you celebrate Easter.

I am simply in awe of your family...I have found it harder and harder to do things like this as we've added each child; but things like this are so, so important. Love the tome scene idea. You set such a great example as a family who keeps priorities in check no matter how many are on board! We gladly soak up all the knowledge you have to share!! I use to do the palm scene with Jesus on the donkey (toy man on toy donkey with kids making construction paper palms- kid took turns moving Jesus along with the others yelled Hosanna and waved their palms) with our first child and the ones we babysat. I've never done it with the kids who followed :( We're definately going to do it THIS year!
We don't celebrate Easter for obvious reasons, but one of the things my Christian step brother's family doe is actually having a Seder, because a) Jesus celebrated Passover and we know he had Seder with the Apostles and b) because they find a lot of symbolism of Jesus. (No surprise, Passover, like most other Jewish holidays, has to do with expecting the messiah.)
We have done a Seder before and I think it is a very rich and deep experience for Christians to learn about the Jewish faith thru special times like a Seder. We have taught our kids some about other Jewish celebrations and they love to learn about them. Any other suggestions or resources?
We are going to watch a Seder tomorrow night on the computer. We wanted to attend, but couldn't get in.
We also like to make a tomb scene.
We use a styrofoam cup, placed in a pie plate and then smother the pie plate and around and over the cup with pudding. Cover it with cookie crumbs to make it look like dirt. We put a pretend Jesus in the tombe and then put a stone over the entrance to the tomb. We have lego soldiers to keep watch. On Easter A.M. the stone is rolled away and the body is gone.
