Today Mya got her cast off.... Praise the Lord! She did fine and we documented her morning. From waiting in the waiting area for xrays with Joseph, to getting her cast off to the picture with staff at RIAO and our wonderful Dr. Standard and of course Mya's sweet heart to want to thank her friend- Dr. Standard.
She has a removable cast and only needs to wear it when she is very active or wants to... She is getting a bath in a few minutes... Her leg is very painful at the knee and because the polio affected the nerves around the knee it will take the most pt and rehab. to get her up going.... but I have no doubt that it will be sooner than later.

So happy for Mya! Just a medical question...did they lengthen the L leg to be longer than the R? Do they expect her L leg to continue growing normally after being lengthened or is that why they made it a little longer to compensate for growth? This is very fascinating and I am so happy for Mya that she can race with Luke! :)

Autumn- The L leg will always be affected by the polio and the growth will be slower than the R leg... They are the same just about in length now with the R leg now maybe being a little bit shorter. Dr. Standard has a mathematical formula for predicting the expected growth and that is how he decides during the lengthening phase if we are done. Her L leg also appears longer because her bone growth was in her femur(the thigh bone)that is where her leg length difference was.Some kids also have their lower leg lengthened.. for now she is fine. Growth is the enemy of most orthopedic issues and we have to see in the yrs ahead just what her legs do to know if she will have to do this again later in her teens. Luke is 4 yrs from his surgery and doing fine.. although he did not have lengthening done. His surgery was straitening and stretching soft tissue which is a diff. ballgame.
Wow! That is awesome! Can you please explain why both of your children needed this procedure? Is one foot longer than the other?
Christine- It is amazing but both kids have different conditions and the ex. fixator works well for lots of orthopedic conditions. If you scroll down to May 12,2010 you can read more about Luke's condition- His r leg was fully attached to his back at birth and his l leg was webbed and had a severe clubfoot.
Mya had polio and her l leg was shorter than her r leg- They allow for a discrepency of like 4cm( I think) before they say shoe lifts will no longer work.. We had waited 3 yrs to do this and finally the diff. was causing her to many problems with her mobility so we had to go ahead and do it.
